Great stuff from Dr. Mark Cheng...

It is the common threads that we should grab hold of - Breath, Posture, Position, Skill.

Move Well then Move Often
Move Well then Move Fast

The Martial, Restorative and the Pedagogical all still have a place.
Progression, Variety and Precision used to direct someone's training program.

These concepts and others are in the manual I wrote to accompany Club Swinging Essentials.

More on this as the weeks go by but a question if I may:
Is the KB swing about Maximum Effort or is it about Maximum/Optimal Force Production?

Keep getting reminders...

As I move more, travel, cough, and train different patterns the attachment points for my mesh in my abdominal wall speak to me.
They speak to me in either dull crampy spasms or sharp spasms to let me know that they are still there. Fun stuff...

I'm training and moving and swinging Clubs etc... but buried under a bit of work so will post training when I can and other observations of course.

The first CICS Club Swinging certification was a success. I'll post when complete feedback is available.

Off to MSP for the First CICS workshop...

That is the Certified Indian Club Specialist workshop taught by Dr. Ed Thomas and myself.

Also look for the Club Swinging Essentials product to be available very soon on Dragondoor.com and Perform Better.

Article on Dragondoor.com

As some know I have been an FMS presenter for a few years now and I have also been though Z-Health R, I and S phase...this article attempts to lay out the issues I see between the FMS and Z systems:

Up front I have to say that Z contains great information - neurology, visual, and vestibular information. There are issues though - in my mind.

Early in the article is a bit about the SAID principle - any comments?

Food stuff...

Picked up a copy of In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan and am finding it an interesting read so far...more on this as I go through it.
But in conversation with a friend of mine (his blog is - http://prickymart.blogspot.com/ ) he pointed me to a blog post he made regarding an MSN article...

Low-Cal Diets May Make You Gain Weight - MSN
..."For the first time in humans, we are finding out that cutting your calories increases cortisol," said lead researcher A. Janet Tomiyama, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholar at the University of California, San Francisco....
"The term 'dieting' brings to mind deprivation, starvation, being miserable and uncomfortable and ultimately failing in weight-loss efforts," said Samantha Heller, a dietitian, nutritionist and exercise physiologist who is familiar with the study....Burning more calories than you consume is how your body loses weight, she said. "However, severe calorie restriction, diet fads, pills and potions, detox cleanses and other quacky approaches to weight loss only contribute to people's diet failures and, in fact, may increase the likelihood of regaining even more weight than what was lost—if any," Heller added....
"By eating foods of higher overall nutritional quality, fullness can generally be achieved on fewer calories, eliminating the need for deprivation," Katz said. "In addition, physical activity can accelerate weight loss, promote health and alleviate stress in the bargain."

Pollan's seven word summary of his philosophy is "Eat food. Not as much. Mostly Plants"
Plants, fruits, beans etc... are "nutrient" dense and make you feel full so this might just line up in the right direction.
Exercise and eat well - now theres an idea ;-)

This is the fireplace area of the main room on the first floor of Fallingwater.
The rock you see extending from the fireplace hearth is the actual rock that Fallingwater is "built into". Amazing the blend of nature and design that Frank Lloyd Wright acheived.

Smooth and Easy...

Over the past couple of days it has just been smooth and easy Yoga, Clubs and a bit of KBs and I am feeling quite good.

Now off to Southern California to teach a KB workshop at the Menifee Valley Athletic Club
www.mvacelite.com

Will be back posting on Monday

Much better...

The past couple of days have progressed nicely with the back.
95% + today

What have I been doing for it?
Foam Roller
Yoga
ASLR and Brettzle (both 1.0 adn 2.0)
Club Swinging
and today 16 kg Get-ups and alternating Swings

I had taken a bit of yoga while living in San Diego and even attended a yoga "certification" here in the Pittsburgh area back in 2006 or so but I let myself quit for various reasons.
Well if you focus on Breath, Posture and Position you have a multiple thousands year old system based on aligning, strengthening and opening the body. Sounds like a pretty good thing.
So Yoga is back to stay in some form.
Foam Roller is with "light" pressure hitting a few key triggerpoint areas opening an opportunity to repattern them during the other work.
Embarking on this journey to open the fascia in my lower back might be a two steps forward - one step back at times thing but well worth it in my mind.

"Know thy Self"

As true now as it was at the temple at Delphi and I keep learning more about "me" all the time...

Z Health is one of the methods that advocates regaining full range of motion and control at all your joints. (for info on the neurological, visual and vestibular aspects of your body Z Health has amazing information - but it is another tool and another source of information - my preferred model is the FMS and implement pieces of the other within that framework.)
Why bring this up?
My body lacks motion at a joint or two...
I lack a fairly significant amount of supination (turning my palm up) on my Left arm.
This means that all the years of all the reps of all the weight during my deadlifting with my left arm palm up (supinated) and right arm palm down (alternating grip) was HUGELY compensated and might be the reason my right lower back ended up being an injury area.
Soft tissue work, joint mobility drills, and when i return to deadlifting I will be using a double overhand grip or hook grip to remove the compensation.

In recent weeks I have had 4 different clinicians (Chiros, massage therapists) point out that I have the tightest skin/fascia over my lower back that they have ever felt.
Meaning that while in most areas of the body you can pick up and "roll" the skin my lower back skin is adhered to my fascia and my fascia has adhered to everything else...not good.
Reading Anatomy Trains by Myers will be a focus as will a variety of stretches, postures and postions to open this skin and fascial area.
This means that all of the work I have done to open my hips will hopefully allow me to more effectively open the lower back. And that now that my abs are "working" (post hernia surgery) I should be able to balance the abs with the thorocolumbar area as the fascia opens.

The Chicken or the Egg...???
Did my left arm lose supination as a result of my lower back or was it my grip work or some other posture, position or activity or was it always like that?
Was my lower back fascia always this restricted or was it deadlifting or some other posture, position or activity?
Which came first...chicken or egg...and does it matter?

I am where I am and having learned more about myself I will address these areas and move along the path...

Fallingwater
Simply amazing

More tomorrow on the trip and on my back (which is improving steadily)

Better but not 100%...

The back continues to unwind slowly but surely.
Clubs and half kneeling work will continue.

Headed off for some R&R over the weekend - stay at a B&B, in depth tour of Falling Water, hiking (which hopefully will help the back) etc... Temps in the 80's and beautiful weather expected.

pics coming next week of Falling Water - second time there and can't wait.

Unwinding

For the first time in a very long time my lower back locked up on me on the plane coming back from a great FMS Advanced Corrective Exercise course in Minneapolis.
Just nice even muscle spasm across the lower back that had me hobbling yesterday but I am unwinding from it today.
Lots of Club Swinging, half-kneeling stretches and movement to unlock the hip flexors and get rid of the lower back spasm. Amazing how effective the Clubs and half kneeling work are for unlocking the body.

I am currently working on regaining some ranges of motion that have always been challenging for me (lower back and thorocolumbar fascia stuff) and sitting in a small seat shifted around reading etc... got me.
My lower back history is an interesting one (at least to me) - injured in high school (sophomore year), periodic back pain following that, ruptured disc 2003 (bad back squat attempt) with microlaminectomy later that year, but have been really successful since then. My back did spasm on me a bit during my hospital stay in early December 2009 (nothing like sleeping in a hospital bed to get those hip flexors to lock down) but that was just a couple of days. This is just a reminder that I have a history there and it can on occasion jump up and bite me a bit.

Feeling better by the hour and will be back to some bodyweight and light KB work this week.

Very quick training

A very brief "stretch/prep"
4 Hill Runs in VFFs
stretch and cool down

I tried to ramp up the run a little each time up the hill and hit a really nice stride on the 4th hill.
Feels good to run well. Calves should be sore tomorrow.

Sunshine and Outdoor training...

A beautiful day here in the 'Burgh (and yesterday for that matter) so I have been getting outside for my training sessions - feels great to be outside in the fresh air after a long cold winter!

Nice progress on the Density training (only 15 sets last time with some hand stress) - this session felt easy and smooth.
Some stretching and movement later (probably Club swinging)

24 kg SLDL alternating legs x 10 reps x 3 sets
24 kg Alternating Swings x 10 reps x 5 sets
Club Swinging 1#

The ladders were without rest between rungs (rest between ladders though) until the third ladder, which is why I stopped at 3 ladders.
It appears the front squats brought up a bit of knee irritation (top of the patella) so those are tabled for a few days. Annoying but I need to listen to what my body is telling me.

Quick training before my trip to Seattle...

Movement prep - ASLR, Brettzel
32 kg Windmill x 5+5
32 kg Clean and Front squat 5+5 x 5 sets
(clean before each squat)
Club Swinging 1#

Off to Seattle tomorrow morning for three workshops in three days - an introductory Club swinging workshop, another large HKC, then a Kettlebells from the Center workshop.
Then the Red Eye back Sunday night.

Here is a quick peak at the Brettzel from my Get-up workshop in Alexandria, VA a couple of weeks ago...

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Keeping on the path...

Yesterday was just some light shoulder and hip openers with a few get-ups and some stretching to try to shake off the soreness from my new training plan.

Today:
Movement prep - ASLR, Brettzel
16 kg Arm Bar and shoulder openers
16 kg Get-up x 2+2
24 kg Military Press ladders {1, 2, 3, 4} x 5 ladders
24 kg One arm swing 10+10 x 4 sets
2# Club swinging

One Kb MP ladders today (one clean per rung of the ladder) - on the second ladder I went in reverse (4, 3, 2, 1) without rest, On the 4th and 5th ladders rungs 1 and 2 were Bottoms up presses.
Feeling good

Monday, March 08, 2010

This how I used to train...
Feels good to be back at it.

Movement prep: ASLR, Brettzel
24 kg Arm bar and hip openers
24 kg Get-up x 2+2
2/24 kg Front Squat Ladders
ladders of {1, 2, 3, 4} x 5 ladders
24 kg Snatch Density Training
4+4 (at the top of each min) x 15 sets
1# Club Swinging

Pavelizer sit-up negatives at work later

Sunday, March 07, 2010

A good session and a direction...

Movement Prep - ASLR, Brettzel
16kg Shoulder openers
16kg Get-up x 3+3
2/24kg Clean and Press Ladders (clean before each press)
ladders of {1, 2, 3} x 10 ladders
24 kg Alternating swing x 20 reps x 5 sets
Hanging leg raise Progressions x 3, 3, 2
Club swinging 1# clubs

Believe it or not I have never really focused on my Military press. A bit of work here or there but never any dedicated practice or volume. So the direction I have chosen for now is alternating days of Military press practice with days of Front squat practice mixing in single KB and double kb work. Swings on pressing days and snatches on front squat days. Simple not easy. Rehab time is over.

Application...

In todays session I started to apply some of the lessons learned at the Level 2...

Prep - ASLR, Brettzel
16 kg Hip and Shoulder openers
16 kg Get-up w/ Windmill at top x 5 singles each side
Viking Push press
28 kg VPP x 9 reps per 15 sec x 6 sets
24 kg VPP x 9 reps per 15 sec x 10 sets
(last 2 sets of the Left arm dropped to 7 reps)
Super secret Ab exercise from the level 2 Hanging leg raise progressions x 2, 2, 2, 1, 1
Pavelizer x 5, 5

Based on the VPP performance today I need to back off to the 24 kg x 8 reps per 15 sec. (maybe even 7 reps) - the "sprinting" feels good at first but then the wheels come off because I haven't earned that speed yet. Just like snatches - if you don't keep an eye on the skill of the exercise you will sacrifice everything for reps and speed. And the Left arm asymmetry is very apparent in this exercise. (yes 7 reps for the next session)
Direct ab work in the form of Hanging leg raise progressions or pavelizer is back to stay.

Back from RKC Level 2 in San Jose...

This past weekends Level 2 RKC has to be one of the top 3 RKC events.
We set a new standard to hit as instructors. The format is finally set - a great schedule, great progressions, format, etc...

Further clarification on Tension by Pavel...

"our nervous system is guided by the 'dominanta', the single focus, in our case lifting a weight. Additional excitation (tension) feeds this dominanta and allows one to be stronger. Focusing on the tension and forgetting about lifting changes the dominanta, as it happens with a heavy gripper. So use as much tension as possible—without shifting your focus from lifting. This will take practice. In the beginning you will see a lot of 'coordination tension', beginner's stiffness during skill practice. It makes you weaker. As you get better you will learn to channel the tension into strength as a gymnast or a lifter."

As much tension as possible without shifting focus from the lift.
As skill improves you will learn to "dial in" the right tension to maximize the lift.

Kind of like a hair cut - you can always trim more (tension - if you start with enough) but you can't add it back if you take too much off (once the "relaxation" has removed it).

Training today will be light Hip and Shoulder openers (maybe a few Get-ups) and 1# and 2# Club swinging...
Then I hit the road to Alexandria, VA.

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Tension and Relaxation the "balance of" those two things is not a simple as "only use as much tension as you need" and other stuff... We practice tension in our lifts but simply saying that you should only use "as much as you need" is NOT the practice of the balance of these two things... There is a DVD called "Fast & Loose-DVD
Secrets of the Russian Champions: Dynamic Relaxation Techniques for Elite Performance
" Fast and Loose or does any RKC remember the "shake and bake" drills? Relaxation is just as much of a skill as Tension so you must practice both. Don't want to experience the negative effects of practicing Tension then learn to "shake" it off and practice relaxation. A pendulum swings to both extremes - trying to stay in the middle doesn't really make sense. And add Indian Clubs - a restorative method of using efficiently integrated movement patterns at varying speeds. Takes your relaxation and adds speed (when appropriate) to the equation.

Training/Learning for today...
Prep - ASLR and Brettzel
CC Knee Tucks x 15, 15, 15
Push-ups x 10, 10, 10
32 kg Goblet Squat x 5
32 kg Arm bar + leg raise x one set on each side
32 kg Get-up x 3 singles each side
{32 kg Push Press x 5+5 + 32 kg 2 arm swing x 10} x 5 sets
1# Club swinging

Heaviest session since surgery - feeling good

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Me time = Training time...

Prep work - ASLR, Brettzel
16 kg Hip and Shoulder openers
1# Club swinging
16 kg Get-up x 5+5
16 kg Goblet Squat + Swing ladder
10 GS + 10 Left arm swings
9 GS + 10 Right arm swings
8 GS + 10 Left arm swings
7 GS + 10 Right arm swings
6 GS + 10 Left arm swings
5 GS + 10 Right arm swings
4 GS + 10 Left arm swings
3 GS + 10 Right arm swings
2 GS + 10 Left arm swings
1 GS + 10 Right arm swings
1# Club swinging
24 kg Get-up x 3 singles each arm
24 kg SLDL x 5+5, 5+5
24 kg Windmill x 5+5
24 kg Bent Press x 5+5
1# Club Swinging
Fast and Loose drills and a little stretching

The ASLR isn't really corrective at this point just a prepratory move since my Shoulder and Hip mobility has improved post surgery and with some of the Get-up progressions.
SLDL kicked my butt (literally and figuratively) I am able to get into my right hip much better now.
Clubs are feeling great. Some of the postures and progressions are really assisting in opening my hips and shoulders.

BTW - I am headed to Alexandria, VA this weekend to teach an HKC (largest since the first one in MSP) and then a 4 hour Get-up workshop the following day. Then it is off to San Jose, CA for RKC Level 2!

Friday, February 12, 2010

Not a training session but a Learning session...

What if you didn't go to the gym to "workout" but rather you went to the gym to Learn and the "workout" was incidental. Ballet, dance, Gymnastics, Martial arts etc... you go to these "classes" to learn but get a "workout" in the process. What about your training?

Prep work - ASLR, Brettzel
16 kg Hip and shoulder openers
1# Club Swinging
16 kg Get-up x 5 singles left and right (various styles)
1# Club Swinging
16 kg Windmill x 5+5

20+ inches of Snow in the Burgh!

4th biggest snowfall ever for Pittsburgh and quite the event - if you like shoveling that is! ;-)

2+ hours of shoveling 20+ inches of snow and some Indian Clubs will be about all I get in today.
Well that and a few more hours of work on the Club Swinging Essentials manual. It's going to be 60+ pages by the time it is done.

Dropping in the pics on my apple with pages and doing a lot of the post production work makes me realize that writing the manual is the easy part!

Caught a question on the forum and wanted to post a quick picture of using a dowel rod to pattern back alignment during the Single Leg Deadlift.

Back from Montreal...

Second trip of the year down as I am back from Montreal and an FMS workshop for 33 great attendees. A nice mix of Athletic Trainers, Coaches, and Trainers made for great questions and interaction.
It was COLD but very nice trip.

Now - the pics are here and I will be burying myself into finishing one of the manuals I am working on.
I'll hit some training later today. (will probably add that later in the day)

Caught a question on the Forum and wanted to post a pic here:

Getting ready for the first Trip of the year...

A little training today:
Chin-ups (bodyweight) x 5, 5, 5, 5, 5
ASLR progressions
16kg Get-up x 5+5
16kg Arm Bar and shoulder openers
16kg ASLR and hip opener progressions

Club swinging later in the day

Since the surgery and working on some of these progressions (shoulder and ASLR) I am hitting 3/3 on the ASLR and 3/3 on the SM and feeling good and moving well.
For those of you not familiar with the scoring system or with the FMS - please visit www.functionalmovement.com

I will post a complete schedule for the year soon. Thats right I need to confirm one more workshop and I will be booked for 2o10. Life and business is good.

Easy day of "Training"

Chin-ups (body weight) x 4 sets of 5 reps
Club Swinging
Stretching - ASLR, hip openers etc...

Chin-ups were good - felt the surgical site a bit (small burning sensation I was warned about by the Dr.) but after the first set felt really good.
Stretching felt great as well and Club Swinging.

A little training today...

Yesterday I went through a bit of Get-up/Leg Raise/Shoulder mobility stuff then had to take care of a furnace/humidifier issue.
Also a good bit of club swinging...

Today:
ASLR, Shoulder Mobility 12 kg Get-up stuff
12 kg Get-up 3+3
Squat 135 x 3 sets of 3
DL 135 x 3 sets of 3
A smattering of pull-up stuff

I'm all about the stuff... ;-)

Couldn't help myself - had to get into a little squat and DL.
PL style squat and two sets sumo/one set conventional DL - very light but testing the water.
Moving well and feeling good

Interesting moment on TV...

I caught a bit of Fight Quest today (can't even remember the channel). Where two American fighters go around the world and train in various fighting styles. Today was an episode where they were in China (i think) learning a bit of the Wushu style.

Two great moments - one of the fighters went to a temple to live with and train with the Monks and about 30 seconds into training with the Master he "uncovered" his inflexibility and he suffered greatly for it. (and he was very asymmetrical - right being much tighter)
Then when leaving the temple the Master told him (paraphrasing) "Kung fu does not matter - developing the spirit is what matters."
Now this went right over the head of the fighter who just wanted to "break peoples noses".

Just found it interesting...
*Added today - point being with the info above...
Mobility/flexibility is a foundation for whatever you do. Laying the foundation for your training (whatever that is...) is important.

A busy few days...

My good friends Jeff O'Connor and Mark Cheng were in town to film a new DVD project.
Advanced Progressions on the Kettlebells from the Ground Up Get-up - Answering questions on and a review of the Kalos Sthenos Get-up (including the origins of the High Bridge), Set up strategies, Hip/ASLR progressions, Shoulder mobility progressions, Stability and Half Kneeling progressions. In other words, a LOT of material and very useful information.

In working on the Progressions covered in the DVD I have already taken my ASLR to a 3/3 and my Shoulder Mobility to a 3/3 for the first time ever. And I have been worked over by these progressions using an 8 and 12 kg KB.

It will take a few months for post production but I will announce when the DVD is ready.

A "real" training session...

I've been "training" some for the past few weeks but had my first what I would consider "real" training session today:
Step #1 from CC Hanging Leg Raise progression x 20, 20, 12
Club Swinging
8Kg Get-ups x 5 singles each side (continuous)
Club Swinging
8Kg Single Leg Deadlift x 5+5, 5+5
Club Swinging
(some hip opening stretches in there as well)

Obviously a lot of work to do on the HLR progressions from CC but its a start - especially post hernia repair.
Right hip feel better than it has in - well... forever. Always had to fight very hard to do a good SLDL on the right side but today was way easier and smoother.
Club Swinging is feeling great. I learn every time I swing the Clubs.
Yes - I did "test" my movements today as described in yesterdays blog.

Grooving the Club Swinging...and a shout out to Adam Glass...
And a Cat picture since those seem to more popular than my training advice at the moment...

Adam Glass has been talking quite a bit about what he is calling Biofeedback in training - basically "testing" a movement to see how your body responds to it. Taking the toe touch as an example - measure or gauge your toe touch before you try a movement - lets say a "squat" (any squat) - then perform a few squats and then retest your toe touch.
Did it get better or stay the same or maybe even get worse?

If better - that is a good movement to train for today
If same - keep looking for a movement that does make a difference
If Worse - do not perform that movement today

Simple right?

Well - I teach this concept all over the world as a way to make sure the corrective strategy you are using to help correct a movement pattern is actually a good corrective drill.
Do a t-spine rotation then re-test the Shoulder mobility screen - better = keep the drill, no difference or worse = try another drill.
Applying this strategy to exercises is the next logical step and it was Adam that took that step.

For myself my ASLR (active straight leg raise) is usually an "issue" so during my club swinging practice today I test various Club Swinging postures and movements against my ASLR and found some interesting results.
There are two postures my body "liked" and one that didn't do a thing for me and only one Club Swinging movement that didn't improve my ASLR. What postures and movements? You'll have to wait for the Club Swinging Essentials product!

The link to Adam's blog is below - I recommend you check it out.

2009 Wrap up and looking forward to 2010

2009 was a very busy year:
27 trips total - taking me to Amsterdam (twice), Budapest (twice), Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Canada, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Connecticut, Kansas, West Virginia, New York, Philly, San Diego, Providence, Long Beach, Orlando, Ohio (twice), Minneapolis (a few times of course), Virginia, D.C, and a couple of others...Plus getting married (short honeymoon), surgery (and pulmonary embolism). Filmed 2 more projects - Club Swinging Essentials and Kettlebells From the Center - with Gray Cook. Writing the manuals to accompany these products has consumed the end of the year.

Mistakes of 2009 -
Training wise I made quite a few mistakes: 1) Travel issues - I let travel knock me out of any sensible training schedule - this simply will not do!, 2) Lack of direct "Core" work - now later in the year when the Hernia was in full effect there wasn't much I could do about this one but I certainly think it was an issue overall - so Hanging Leg Raises, Jandas etc... will be a consistent part of my routines this year (Convict Conditioning and BPA) in addition to the Reflexive Core Training in FMS, 3) I let go of any Max strength work - deadlifts and squats will return to the program as will pull-ups/chin-ups, 4) Bending & gripping work will be back in 2010.
Travel is an issue I need to deal with much better and I am taking more control over it is 2010.

Looking forward to 2010 -
Travel - I have about 4 workshop openings left for 2010 and it is January 1st. So I may actually start to schedule things for 2011.
Writing - the CK-FMS manual is next on the list after the manuals for Club Swinging and KBs from the Center are done and I am thinking that my own book has waited long enough.
Training - Obviously as noted above there were quite a few mistakes last year but I have to "make haste slowly" as I return to my training. Get-ups and Swings will be the starting point.

So lets get out there and make 2010 a great year!

Check out the new Product Page I created for easy linking to any of my products:

WOW - the response has been HUGE...

Convict Conditioning How to Bust Free of All Weakness—Using the Lost Secrets of Supreme Survival Strength

When I had the chance to preview and then help with some editing on the book Convict Conditioning I knew it would be both popular and controversial but it has exploded far beyond what I had expected...
"To paraphrase a famous political quote: "It's the progressions stupid.' Coach Wade has laid out a set of progressions in Convict Conditioning that can lead to mastery of the big 6 bodyweight exercises and you would be wise to listen. This is knowledge proven in "extreme' conditions. So respect the progressions and put in your time—you'll be stronger for it."
—Brett Jones Master RKC, CSCS, CK-FMS
Do you travel a lot as I do? Having a solid set of bodyweight exercises to fall back on during travel is essential
Have you been frustrated by trying to hop right in on an exercise like a One-arm Push-up or Single Leg Squat? Maybe you didn't follow the right progression(s) to get there safely and effectively
Regardless of the title and controversy the information is solid and worth your time as a trainer or trainee.

Click the link above to read the description of the book and various testimonials...

Pair it with the Naked Warrior by Pavel and you have a superior bodyweight training pair!

2010 Here we come...
So the recovery continues and writing dominates my days but life is good and I am looking forward to a great 2010 - even with this monkey - I mean cat on my back!
Let me know what you think of the different look for the blog.

I am using a little IMTUG gripper to get started with some hand strength work and still turning Clubs on a regular basis.

To warm up or not to warm up - That is the question...???

A response to a question on the dragondoor.com forum on whether or not to warm up prior to training.

Define "warm-up"? In "big box gym" parlance it is 10 minutes on a treadmill and some static stretching. I have even run into some that say they need 30-40 minutes before they are "ready" to train. Some will say not to "warm-up". Citing the need of survival reaction or the law enforcement officer that needs to go from "zero to hero" in an instance.
Are you a member of military or law enforcement? And does it matter
As has been noted by Zachriah and some others - in moments of survival reaction your body takes care of the warm up (endocrine response etc...)
The answer is somewhere in the middle but not anywhere near traditional recommendations - What if your everyday movement ability and skill was high enough so you were "prepared" after a brief amount of preparation specific to the goals of the session and your individual movement issues?
In Super Joints, Pavel recommends a daily morning routine is advocated so that your body will "remember" this movement work and be better prepared for the day. Z health is a daily routine. We move everyday so why shouldn't we strive for excellent movement everyday. A "warm up" is not an excuse to avoid building full and superb joint mobility and movement skill - but that is precisely what people use a warm up for - they walk around with far (and I mean FAR) from optimal movement skill but feel prepared to train after a "warm up" that provides a "false" increase in their movement. There is a reason an FMS screen is performed without warm up - to catch your true movement - not your warm ups movement. There is a reason Z and Super Joints are daily. Build your movement skill - remove restrictions and target the areas that need attention.

When I am lifting (surgery is a bummer) I don't "warm up" - I perform Movement prep and then Progress into my training. Movement prep might take the form of some ASLR work from FMS and a brief Z session focused on some areas I need to "touch base" with prior to loading them. Then it is a progressive build up to my goal lift.
Lets say that it is squat day - Bodyweight squats are up first, Then an unloaded barbell, then 135 and so on....
Not 15 reps but 4-6 focusing on perfect groove and pattern. Your jumps during your "build up" might be different but when I was squatting "heavy" (for me) it would be something like bodyweight, 135, 225, 315, 365, 405 and by that time I was at or nearing my working weights and was ready to hit my sets with precision and focus. Not fatigued by 4-6 sets of 1-15 reps. Build up instead of "warm up".

Build movement skill and movement ability that is "permanent" a solid foundation that is the base for and supports your goals and your movement potential - don't rely on a "warm up" but rather create a situation where you prepare for the demands of the session.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

and

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

May the Joy of the Season be with you and your family!

A quick Travel Year in Review...

It was a banner year for travel here at Applied Strength - aka... - Me!

27 trips total - taking me to Amsterdam (twice), Budapest (twice), Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Canada, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Connecticut, Kansas, West Virginia, New York, Philly, San Diego, Providence, Long Beach, Orlando, Ohio (twice), Minneapolis (a few times of course), Virginia, D.C, and a couple of others...Plus getting married (short honeymoon), surgery (and pulmonary embolism).

Quite a year to say the least - RKC and FMS are growing dramatically and business is great!

I am already booked for over 3/4 of the year for 2010 - so 2010 is looking fantastic as well.

Two products in the works now and another video being shot in January.

Life is great!

A Little Research Review...

My most recent Strength and Conditioning Journal (vol 31, num 6, December 2009) and Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (vol 23, num 9, December 2009) arrived and I actually spent a small amount of time looking through them and wanted to highlight a couple of things...

In the S&C Journal:
an article on using the Body Weight Forward Lunge as a screen - Holy Re-inventing the Wheel and leaving a lot out!
The FMS has 7 Screens for a reason - finding an issue in an integrated pattern like a lunge might have nothing to do with the lunge. FMS progresses from integrated to simple patterns for a reason - an Active Straight Leg Raise issue might fix what looks like back hyperextension in a lunge, fixing a Trunk Stability Push-up issue might fix what looks like a core stability problem in the lunge.
One movement doesn't tell the whole story.

An article on stretching the Posterior Shoulder - but no mention of normalizing Thoracic Spine mobility. (must not have seen Secrets of the Shoulder)
Not that the stretches are "wrong" per se (other than the sleeper stretch - just don't like that one) but that the shoulder can only work correctly if the t-spine is not restricted and the scapula can stabilize effectively. So just stretching something that is "tight" might not be the answer - what if it is tight because something else isn't doing it's job and that muscle or structure HAD to become tight as a compensation?
We have to look beyond the sight of pain or tightness.

(there were a couple of others but you get the idea from the S&C Journal)

From the Journal of S&C Research:
An article on using Dynamic Field tests used in an NFL Combine "Setting" to identify Lower Extremity Functional Asymmetries - basically took 6 people (not a large study group) and ran them through three PERFORMANCE tests. Yet again a group that doesn't get the idea that movement quality must PRECEDE performance. NOT that performance testing isn't valid - it's just that movement lays the foundation for performance. Testing performance matters after movement quality is checked otherwise you might just be testing compensation.
I actually like the performance tests that were used but movement comes first.

A comparison of the Free Weight squat and Smith Machine Squat found that the Free Weight squat has 43% higher muscle activation. Well thank goodness that finally been proven!!??
A machine squat (especially a smith machine) can never approximate a actual Barbell Back Squat - period. But it was impressive to see the large difference between the two and it seemed that the researchers were actually looking to prove that the Smith Machine squat was as good as or better than the free weight squat. So Cudos (sp?) to them for simply reporting the data.

A Kinematic analysis of the powerlifting Squat and conventional deadlift in competition looking for crossover effect between the lifts caught my eye...
And actually had some good stuff in it - final findings indicate that the squat is a synergistic movement where the deadlift is a sequential lift. This makes sense to me.
They were looking at the sticking points in the lifts and comparing the two to find similarities or cross over but it appears that the difference in joint angles at the sticking points makes cross over difficult at best.
This also makes sense although I will have to say that #1 - it depends on your individual area of weakness, #2 - these were competition lifts (which is good and bad and they had a good section in the article re: the difference in competition lifts).
Now where they really "brought it home" in style - their data showed that as expected the sticking point in the deadlift was at the knees but what they found was that bar speed began to decrease BEFORE the bar reached the knees. So the popular method for working the sticking point of the knees in the deadlift is to perform "lockouts" with the bar starting at the knees but this misses the fact that bar speed has already gone down before this point and is working on the wrong "weak link".
They recommend starting the bar 6 cm below the knees to hit the entire range from deceleration to the knees.
Also they site the idea that people typically recommend removing the deadlift and just working on the squat - an idea which they refute and simply state that "...deadlift should be properly and strategically placed in a periodized training...."
"In conclusion, .....the best way to improve the deadlift is to deadlift."
Now where have I heard that before??????
Overall - nice study that was actually looking for some interesting stuff.

More Christmas with Cats....

Christmas with cats....

Catching up and rolling on...

Spent the past couple of days trying to catch up - on sleep, email, invoices etc...
No matter what you have going on business and life march on the challenge is to learn on the fly and keep up the pace you set.

Rolling on - Indian Clubs again yesterday and today
These are feeling great and allowing me to practice my skill and get "active" again with some very mindful movement.

Writing, work and some interesting news...

The DVD of the month in Muscle and Fitness magazine for Jan 2010 -
Kalos Sthenos - Kettlebells from the Ground Up by Brett Jones, Gray Cook and Mark Cheng!
How about that - kettlebells and mindful movement as the DVD of the month in a bodybuilding magazine??!!!
I'm picking up a copy tomorrow to checkout the details.

Freedom!!

Hot showers, sleeping through the night - simple stuff but it all feels a bit better after a stay in the hospital!

Made a trip to the store to break my isolation - great to be out and about...

20 minutes (give or take) of Indian Club turning and a 20 or so minute walk for a bit of activity today - feeling good.

Now for some rest etc...

Tuesday, December 08, 2009

Finally!!

I'll be released from the hospital today. My 3 am blood test finally came back at the right level and I will be sent home at some point this morning or early afternoon.

Rest and recuperation will be the theme of the next few days. I don't know if you have ever had an extended hospital stay but lets just say that the hospital is NOT where you go for rest. Alarms, taking vitals, blood tests etc... are happening 24 hours a day.
Now I will say that I have received excellent care - simply excellent - but it is time to go home.

Thank you to everyone for your support over these past few days - it has been a great comfort and help.

Monday, December 07, 2009

Hopefully only one more day...

My blood levels are close but no cigar so one more day in the hospital - hopefully!!!
(fingers and toes crossed)

On a positive note I am moving around much better and the Hernia repair feels like it is healing up quite well. Still have a pressure dressing over the original hernia site to make sure no fluid accumulates there and I haven't had any negative effects to the hernia surgery due to the thinning of my blood.

Fewer blood tests and more waiting today....

On a related note - I was speaking to my Dr. this morning and he told me that it was fortunate that I'm not a complainer. Otherwise he might not have taken my shortness of breath quite so seriously. But I was aware enough of my situation to know that I needed to check in with my Dr.

Saturday, December 05, 2009

A new definition of Balance...

I am used to talking asymmetry and balancing out movement patterns and restriction in the body but I am involved in another type of balancing act at the moment - balancing out my blood levels and reaching therapeutic level with my medications.
Blood draws every 6 hours and tweaking the meds to get me in the right zones which will allow me to go home (looking like monday now...) and lots of rest are the order of the day.

"Shock Value"

We talk about shock value in re: to marketing, news stories etc... but shock value has a whole other meaning when you find out that the shortness of breath you almost blew off was actually a life threatening situation. I have been extremely blessed and fortunate in my life and was again in this case.
My PCP's nurse took my phone call on Friday morning and recognized the situation right away and they made sure I was taken care of quickly. (Guess who's getting a Christmas Card?)
I reached a point while waiting for the results of a CT scan with contrast (getting that contrast put in is an interesting experience) where I was complaining about the cost and "what a waste of time this was...." (i think my wife said something about being a "typical male" - not sure what that means...) when the Dr. came back and confirmed that it was indeed a PE and that I would be admitted etc... WHAM!!! Right between the eyes!
It's just a shock - no other way to describe it. I'm fine and everything is ok but the realization that it could have very quickly and very easily been far more is "shock value" as far as I am concerned at the moment.
Considering my age, fitness and the fact that I have basically zero other risk factors (other than recent surgery - a major risk factor) - it has even more "shock value" - I mean I am fit and strong etc.... this shouldn't be happening to me...all of that...
And my situation is really mild - it didn't go the other way and I did get taken care of and people receive far worse news or have far worse outcomes than I am having so don't think that I am inflating the experience. But - every experience is unique and significant to the individual.

Lesson learned - Listen to your body and get help from the right people.
And be thankful for every moment - "No day is guaranteed anyone."

Friday, December 04, 2009

Well - Sometimes you just never know...

After having shortness of breath overnight and checking in with my Dr. this morning I was sent to the ER for testing and turns out I have a Pulmonary Embolism (one clot in the lower lobe of the right lung).
I have been admitted the hospital and am on heparin and cumadin and might not get out till Monday - just what i had planned for the weekend....

Things are steady and looking good now - but you just never know....

Day 5 post surgery

Huge improvement in the last couple of days!
Pain is greatly reduced and I am walking around a lot more.

Also spending a significant amount of time working on the two DVD + manual products that we will have coming out soon.

Thanks for all of the well wishes

Recovering from Surgery...

Tomorrow morning will make three days out from Ventral Hernia repair and I am slowly but surely progressing.
The Surgeon and his two assistants each told me independently that it was a painful procedure and boy were they right.
A lot of sleeping and resting is the way to go for the moment...

Oh the places you'll go....

I was reading some Dr. Seuss this week with one of Peter Lakatos' children and it just kind of stuck ;-)
A huge thank you to Peter and his family for their hospitality and generosity - sometimes thank you seems very inadequate to express gratitude but it's the best we have at the moment.

Blogging from 30,000 feet...

That's right I am blogging while flying from Atlanta to Pittsburgh - wi-fi is now available on most Delta flights and I just had to check it out!

I am on the way home from presenting at the NPE workshop in Orlando and have some very serious business thoughts flying around in my head - too much to blog about but NPE has some incredible tools for the business of personal training - check them out if you are in the business!

Questions on Rope Training -

Have you seen Ropes training?
There are imitators out there but only one John Brookfield and only one original ropes training program!
Check out John's latest ropes training DVD by clicking here:

Battling Ropes - Hurrican Ingrid

I am going to visiting John next year to go through the ropes training myself but until then...

Off to the first East Coast RKC...

I am headed to Philadelphia, Pa today for the first east coast RKC. Really looking forward to teaching this weekend.

Otherwise I am turning Clubs and still moving.

Davor's comment below on my last post and some Dragondoor Forum posts have me thinking:

Are you ready for a volume routine?
What do I mean by a volume routine? Check this article for the Russian Squat Routine:
Insane right? Especially if you use it for your deadlift!
I went through the RSR twice for my deadlift and added 50 pounds both times. So it works but you won't be doing much of anything else while you are on it.
So how do you know if you are ready?
First - just assume that you aren't. Mean, I know but most people think they are an advanced lifter when they are just climbing toward intermediate.
Second - Clean up your movement before taking on a routine like this. FMS, Z - whatever but move often, move well and move with a purpose.
Third - Technique, Technique, Technique - did I mention technique? A volume routine can cement your form - is it exactly what you want to have cemented?
Forth - There is a Pre-RSR provided in the article - use it.
Fifth - Understand that specializing in something means giving up other stuff.

Not a complete list and it needs to be tailored to you - the individual - but it should provide a starting point for those of you thinking of a volume routine.

Going to be taking it easy for a while...

Good training today:
Prep - ASLR, T-spine, Club Swinging
10 minutes of Get-ups w/ 20kg KB - various styles
6 sets of: (w/ 20 kg KB)
Goblet Squat x 10 + Alt swings x 10 + Full Bridge x 3
Inversion table to finish

Club Swinging is feeling great.

I'll be getting surgery on a ventral hernia this december so I'll be taking it easy on my training.
This is the reason you haven't seen a lot of high tension exercise on my training recently.
Just gotta roll with it!
